"World’s Greatest Places of 2021"

TIME recognized Costa Rica’s commitment to conservation in its third annual list of the World's Greatest Places. Thanks to Costa Rica’s conservation efforts, forests now cover 53% of the country’s lands – a dramatic reversal after decades of severe deforestation – and 98% of its energy comes from renewable sources, a strong step toward its goal of becoming one of the world’s first decarbonized nations by 2050.

| ENTRY REQUIREMENTS |
Costa Rica’s air borders are currently open to all travelers, and protocols remain in place to protect visitors and residents. For the most up-to-date entry requirements, including information about Costa Rica’s travel insurance policy, head to the Visit Costa Rica website.

| According to Costa Rica Tourism Board (ICT) data, solo female travelers represent an estimated 15.8% of the total arrivals of tourists in Costa Rica. The ICT, in partnership with the National Institute of Women (INAMU) and the National Tourism Security Commission (Consetur), launched the RED SOFIA program to promote gender equality in the tourism industry and create safer environments for solo travelers.

| Ballena National Marine Park is the National Park for marine life lovers! Humpback whales arrive every year (from July to October) to carry out their reproductive cycles, at the Whale’s Tail — a point in the park with a rocky and sandy formation. Walk along pristine beaches or scuba dive and see spotted dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, manta rays, hammerhead sharks, parrotfish and mackerels.
