Certificate of Sustainable Tourism (CST) Modernized Under New Normal
This year, 60 additional companies have managed to meet the strictest requirements of the new Certificate of Sustainable Tourism (CST) 2.0, at basic and elite levels. Certificates were delivered virtually and included tourism sectors such as accommodation, gastronomy, theme parks, rental vehicles, hot springs and spa companies, tour operators, and various institutions and organizations. In addition, the Costa Rica Tourism Board announced that three protected areas are in the process of obtaining the CST – Manuel Antonio, Carara, and Poás Volcano National Parks, which sets a precedent in the history of this standard of globally recognized sustainability.

With its several protected areas, lakes, lagoons, volcanoes, rivers, and waterfalls, the Northern Plains is an adventure site where nature-loving visitors can enjoy the region’s many riches. The area features wet and evergreen forests as well as fertile plains that serve as sanctuaries for water birds, reptiles, mammals and the prehistoric Gaspar fish. Adventure activities and nature watching may be enjoyed on the region’s rivers– Peñas Blancas, San Carlos, Toro, Puerto Viejo and Sarapiquí– some of which are important navigational routes. One sight you won’t want to miss is the 13-square-mile Arenal Volcano that has been active since 1968.

Celebrate Día de la Mascarada
In North America, October 31 calls for dressing up as ghosts, pumpkins, witches and vampires. In Costa Rica, the last day of the month calls for dressing up too, but in large, elaborate masks. The tradition began in 1996, when the country’s government declared October 31, Día de la Mascarada Tradicional Costarricense or Day of the Traditional Costa Rican Masquerade.
