Costa Rica Opens 30th National Park
Once the home of a wildlife refuge, Costa Rica's San Lucas Island now welcomes visitors to discover its new identity as the country's 30th national park. Located off the Pacific coast of the Gulf of Nicoya, San Lucas Island National Park is made up of both land and coastal areas that cover 1.8 square miles. While in San Lucas, visitors can explore historical buildings – now considered cultural heritage sites – and uncover the island’s notorious past.

Playa Hermosa Named Next “World Surf Reserve”
After a competition between the best-surfing destinations across the world, nonprofit organization Save the Waves named Playa Hermosa de Garabito, located in Puntarenas, as the next “World Surf Reserve.” It will be the first World Surf Reserve in Central America and the 11th globally. World Surfing Reserves serve as a model standard for preserving wave breaks and their surrounding areas by protecting key environmental, cultural and economic attributes in coastal communities.

In the 1940s, 75% of Costa Rica was cloaked in lush rainforests. Once loggers arrived and cleared the land, between a half and a third of forest cover had been destroyed by 1987. Today almost 60% of the land is once again forest. Costa Rica’s rich landscape is home to around half a million plant and animal species. Reopening Plans & Procedures
The government of Costa Rica announced that the country’s international borders reopened to select countries and states. As of October 1st, Costa Rica will be permitting additional US states. For the complete list of regions or countries that have received entry authorization by the Costa Rican government and for the most up-to-date entry requirements, including information about Costa Rica’s mandatory travel insurance policy, head to the Visit Costa Rica website. Costa Rica’s government has taken a measured approach to reopening its borders and authorized regions or countries will be evaluated on an ongoing basis.
