MMGY Global
This upcoming Saturday is Juneteenth and the DEI Council wanted to take the opportunity to acknowledge the significance of this day in our nation’s history and in the broader fight for equality. We’ve provided several resources below to continue to listen, learn, reflect and act on an individual basis to honor this important day.

While in 2021, it is not one of MMGY Global’s assigned public holidays, employees have the flexibility to recognize and honor this day with their floating holiday.

Juneteenth Independence Day, also known as Freedom Day, is a holiday recognizing the emancipation of those who had been enslaved in the United States. This year marks 156 years since June 19, 1865 when enslaved African and Black Americans in Texas first became aware of the Emancipation Proclamation and their freedom, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed. In 2018, The U.S. Senate passed a resolution designating June 19 as “Juneteenth Independence Day.” Yesterday, the Senate unanimously passed a bill that would establish Juneteenth as a federal holiday. This bill now heads to the House.

Below are several events to participate in to honor the holiday, as well as several Black-owned businesses to support in your local cities as a direct and sustainable way to make an impact this weekend, and year-round. We’ve also included several curated lists of books by Black authors to explore to celebrate Black voices and continue to be an ally.
