The RECE team and the Culture Crew would like to extend an invitation to you to celebrate Juneteenth with us on Wednesday, June 15.

Join us for good food and fellowship as we observe and commemorate the ending of slavery in the United States. Juneteenth is a significant holiday within the Black community, originating in the city of Galveston, Texas, where enslaved African Americans were finally informed of their freedom on June 19, 1865 – about two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863.

Juneteenth is considered a national day of independence for many African Americans, and it is celebrated as Freedom Day. While it’s a reminder of the country’s dark past, it is indeed a festive moment that is celebrated with BBQs, festivals and entertainment. Last year, President Biden commissioned Juneteenth as a U.S. federal holiday, the first federal holiday established since Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Join us Wednesday, June 15, as we celebrate this inclusive moment of freedom and humanity. To learn more about Juneteenth, check out this moving story on The Washington Post’s newsfeed.
