Preparing for the Much-Anticipated COVID-19 Vaccine
|
Europe is starting distribution of their COVID-19 vaccine this week and, with the U.S. shortly following, the CDC and WHO/Europe are providing distribution guidelines, priorities and recommendations. Although we know we will still have time with masks, social distancing and restrictions – this is the light we have all been anticipating! The COVID-19 vaccine is not your average vaccine; it was developed to manufacture future vaccines quickly if there is another pandemic. Check out this great article explaining how vaccines are made. How are you feeling about the vaccine and, when available, is it something you feel comfortable getting?

MMGY + Community Involvement

Since December 2019, Anna Chadwick has been a Communications Volunteer for the National MS Society Richmond and Kingston Group. She does not have a personal connection with Multiple Sclerosis but she wanted to do something in her spare time where she could help people and the local community. As a Communications Volunteer, she put together a bimonthly newsletter to keep members up to date with the latest news from the MS Society while also including uplifting content. The newsletter is sent to both those with MS in the area and their family members who often act as their caregivers. She really enjoys it and says it puts a smile on her face when she hears from members that they have enjoyed reading her newsletter.

During Miriam Jones' furlough, she did some charity work with Peabody – a local London housing association. Her role was to call people living on their own and those deemed as vulnerable to have a conversation so that they would not get lonely during the first lockdown period. When she returned to work, she was unable to commit to this further, but then began to volunteer at Nedhead Nox, which specialized in supporting local communities in need by providing food boxes and other help. Miriam started taking calls from those in need of support and continues to help with Nedhead Nox, but she is now in a coordinator role due to work commitments with MMGY Hills Balfour.

Founded in 1890 and headquartered in Washington, D.C., The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution is a non-profit, non-political volunteer women's service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America's future through better education for children. Each year, the California State Society Daughters of the American Revolution invites individuals to assist the California DAR in recognizing outstanding young members of our organization. Tricia Carvajal was invited to serve as one of the three judges for the California Outstanding Junior Member Contest for 2020. This contest honors members who are 18 through 35 years of age for their service to DAR and their communities. She was selected because DAR recognized Tricia as a young, successful, female business professional and they knew she would appreciate the significance of this contest. The state contest is part of the national contest sponsored by the Junior Membership Committee of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The first step in the process begins with DAR’s nearly 3,000 chapters. Each chapter can name one of its young members as its Outstanding Junior Member. Eligible chapter honorees are judged at the state level. The young woman selected as the state Outstanding Junior Member goes forward to be judged at the national level. Tricia's role as a judge is an integral component of the contest. Her knowledge of important initiatives and programs in our state placed her in the best position to evaluate the community service of the candidates. Judging the contest involves reviewing the contest applications of the Outstanding Junior Member selected by each participating chapter, selecting a winner, and completing a judge’s decision sheet.

Christy Vaught's creativity and talent for executing flawless events extends beyond MMGY and into her community. Christy is very dedicated to her church, the Blue Springs Baptist Temple community and serving as its Media & Youth Leader. She is responsible for the congregation's multimedia, graphic design and printing, and she leads its youth group together with her husband, Jack. Throughout the pandemic, Christy has managed the church's weekly streaming services. One very special thing she has done is making Easter baskets heading into Easter weekend and driving around to deliver the baskets to all the kids as everyone was still on lockdown at home.
