Strategy + Travel Insights
Interest in International Travel Remains Strong for Affluent Americans
According to MMGY Travel Intelligence's recent 2022 Portrait of American International Travelers™ study, American international travelers expect to take more international vacations and spend more on international vacations than they did prior to the pandemic. This trend increases significantly among travelers with household incomes of $250K+. This suggests that despite the rising costs of travel and current world events, international travel in late 2022 and in 2023 is poised to increase among this active and affluent traveling audience.
Young Adults Are Finding
Comfort in the Known
As illustrated via Mintel Trend In Control, in times of uncertainty consumers crave a sense of agency over their lives. The pandemic and recent inflation have certainly caused consumers to feel helpless. To help handle high levels of stress, young adults choose to stick with the familiar. When asked to complete the statement "If I had more free time, I would ... " young adults chose "do things I know I love" (53%) over "do things I've never done before" (45%). However, when asked what could convince them to try something new, young adults overwhelmingly highlighted "value" as a motivator with more nuanced factors such as fitting into their schedule, the availability of food and drinks, and the desire to post about it on social media shaping their concept of value.
Travelers Are Prioritizing
Experiences Over Things
Historically, this trend tends to remain relevant during past economic recessions. A majority of travelers agree that the memories they get from vacations are more valuable to them than any material item they purchased last year, with many U.S. travelers (59%) saying that they prefer paying for experiences over buying tangible items. Inflation is tightening American budgets and causing Americans to be more mindful of where and when they spend their money to ensure they are getting the best value on their purchases. Therefore they will focus on experiences by looking to travel rather than spend their money on material items.

Leah Swofford, Cynthia Zavala, Tim Switzer and Dustin Sharp recently visited our client Visit Visalia to share industry insights, campaign results and more to their board of hoteliers and local business owners. The trip also included a visit to Visalia’s backyard, Sequoia National Park, where the team stared up in awe at the General Sherman Tree – the largest living tree in the world.
