A Thousand New Adventures
During his recent visit, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken entered into an agreement with Papua New Guinea (PNG) on behalf of the United States to counter China's growing influence in the Pacific region. Blinken emphasized that the defense and maritime agreement was developed equally by the United States and Papua New Guinea as sovereign partners. As part of his trip, Blinken is scheduled to meet with 14 leaders from Pacific island nations. The objective of Washington and its allies is to discourage Pacific island countries from establishing security connections with China, a concern that has heightened due to tensions over Taiwan, which China claims as its territory and has threatened military action if the island attempts to secede.
