Lonely Planet Best in Travel 2021 Sustainability Award - Learn More
Earlier this month, Lonely Planet released its list of “Best in Travel 2021” list, which features Rwanda alongside world-class destinations! One of the world’s oldest, largest and most esteemed travel media awards, Lonely Planet’s “Best in Travel” list for 2021 features countries, regions and cities around the world that excel in sustainability, community and diversity. Rwanda was awarded the “Best Sustainable Wildlife Program” for our efforts to protect our majestic mountain gorillas through tourism.

African Parks Partners with Nyungwe National Park
On October 7, the Rwandan government in partnership with African Parks announced the signing of a new 20-year agreement to ensure the sustainable management of Nyungwe National Park. The commitment will preserve the biodiversity of one of the largest expanses of forest in the country, while also securing lasting benefits for Rwanda’s wildlife and citizens. This announcement follows 10 years of a successful partnership between the RDB and African Parks.

Wildlife Ranger Challenge
In an effort to unite and support park rangers across the African continent who have been affected by COVID-19, Rwandan park rangers from Volcanoes, Nyungwe, Akagera and Gishwati-Mukura national parks participated in a Wildlife Ranger Challenge to run a half-marathon race. A combined 110 Rwandan park rangers joined more than 5,000 rangers across Africa to raise awareness for the hardships of park employees who are enduring drastic cuts in salaries and resources amid COVID-19, yet work tirelessly to protect the continent’s iconic wildlife. The race helped garner sponsorship and donations from organizations and individuals around the world, raising more than $650,000 for African parks and wildlife.

New – Gishwati Mukura
Wilderness Safaris recently announced the first stage of developing exclusive chimpanzee and primate trekking experiences in the Gishwati Forest, in partnership with RDB and the Forest of Hope Association. Wilderness Safaris, owners and operators of the popular Magashi Tented Camp accommodation in Akagera National Park and Bisate Lodge near Volcanoes National Park, announced the opening of the Forest of Hope Guest House and Camp Site near the Gishwati Research Station, which will open later in 2020.

Christmas trees and tales of Santa Claus are somewhat uncommon in Rwanda, but the spirit of the holiday is strong in traditions of relaxation, time spent with family, prayer, and good food. On Christmas, many Rwandans will dine on grilled beef and goat, fried potatoes, and rice as well as isombe (mashed cassava leaves), and green bananas in tomato sauce. Yum!
