IMPORTANT UPDATES for visiting Rwanda
On March 16, the Rwandan government announced adjustments to the ongoing COVID-19 safety regulations throughout Rwanda. Key changes include a revised curfew nationwide between 9 p.m. and 4 a.m., with businesses to close at 8 p.m. Movement between districts is still restricted, although tourists can continue to move throughout the country. Physical meetings are now permitted in small numbers (30% of any venue capacity). Restaurants and cafes can remain open at 30% occupancy with the requirement to close at 8 p.m., although bars remain closed. Passengers arriving at the Kigali airport are still required to provide negative PCR test results taken no more than 72 hours before arrival in Rwanda. Tourists must continue to abide by all health guidelines, which include testing on arrival and before primate trekking. These resolutions will continue at least through March 30, at which time the situation will be reviewed. More information on these changes can be found on the Visit Rwanda website and on the "Rwanda Reopens" FAQ page.

Gorilla Trekking Safety Precautions1
Gorilla Trekking Safety Precautions
With an estimated 1,000 mountain gorillas in existence, the life of each gorilla is invaluable to the overall forest ecosystem. Enhanced safety protocols have been implemented in Rwanda since the return of tourism in August 2020 to ensure that the health of mountain gorillas will not be affected by human observers. Trekkers are required to provide a negative COVID test prior to arrival in Rwanda and are tested once again no more than 72 hours before their primate trek. Once in the national park, trekkers confirmed to show no visible signs of illness must wear provided surgical masks for the duration of their trek, and groups are now capped at six people instead of eight. Writer Ali Wunderman’s story for Matador Network nicely sums up Rwanda’s primate trekking changes in the interest of gorilla safety.
