The Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund is now open to visitors! As of February 1, the general public can enjoy the campus’ exhibits and interactive learning tools. As the new permanent site of the Karisoke Research Center's state-of-the-art facilities, this campus will also help researchers and conservationists make great strides in their work with the Volcanoes National Park gorillas.

On March 1, the Rwanda Development Board hosted a webinar about Rwanda’s art and culture. Mr. Vivaldi Ngenzi, Museum Management Specialist at the Rwanda Art Museum, co-hosted the webinar and shared his insight into the country’s unique arts scene. In conjunction with the country’s conservation-oriented focus, the Rwandan government banned plastic bags in 2008. Travelers should be aware that any plastic bags they carry will be confiscated upon arrival at the airport or any other point of entry. It is highly recommended that those coming to Rwanda and anticipating some shopping sprees bring reusable bags or prepare to buy some locally.

Rwanda Chosen as Host of Newest Ironman 70.3 Triathlon
Ironman Group has chosen Rwanda as the newest Ironman 70.3 Triathlon destination for the 2022 race calendar. The Ironman 70.3 Rwanda race, in which participants swim 1.2 miles, bike 56 miles and run 13.1 miles, will take place on August 14 in Rubavu District. In 2023 and 2024, the race will reoccur in Rubavu.

Coffee in Rwanda
Missionaries brought coffee trees to Rwanda in 1904, and the crop has been an important player in the country’s economy ever since. Just about 95% of the beans are Bourbon, a world-renowned Arabica varietal. Travelers can explore Rwanda’s coffee scene mainly in Gisenyi, close to Lake Kivu. Some coffee farmers’ cooperatives even offer guided tours so that visitors can better understand the coffee production processes. This is a great activity for travelers who need a rest between busy days of trekking but still want to learn about one of Rwanda’s many interesting offerings.

The Tour du Rwanda took place from February 20–27 and brought together cyclists from all over the world. Natnael Tesfatsion from Eritrea took home the first place prize. Rwanda has become an increasingly prominent destination in the world of cycling since 2008 when the Tour du Rwanda became an international event instead of one just for athletes based in East Africa.
