On September 24, Rwanda celebrated World Gorilla Day by naming 24 baby mountain gorillas born in the last 12 months in Volcanoes National Park. The 17th edition of Kwita Izina, the annual naming ceremony, took place virtually for the second year in a row due to the ongoing pandemic. This year’s theme was "Conservation and Sustainable Tourism – A Foundation for Future Generations," and namers included conservationists, international celebrities and dignitaries, notable tourism partners and friends of Rwanda.

COVID-19 Update
Rwanda’s COVID-19 Updates
Rwanda continues to diligently combat the ongoing global pandemic with a vaccination campaign that’s gaining steam with vaccines now available to all Rwandans aged 18 and older. As of mid-September, more than 3.76 million total doses have been given, with nearly 1.7 million Rwandan people fully vaccinated. With this, the country is approaching 15% of the total Rwandan population with nearly 50% of Kigali residents vaccinated. Current targets aim for 70% of Rwanda’s eligible population to be vaccinated by mid-2022, but current projections show that goal may be reached as early as February or March of next year.

Visit Rwanda was proud to be the official founding and host partner of the 2021 Basketball Africa League, which included the Kigali Arena playing host to the first-ever Basketball Africa League tournament in May of this year. Last month, Kigali also hosted the 30th edition of FIBA AfroBasket 2021, paving the way for Rwanda to be a continental leader in hosting major sports events and competitions.

Did you know?
Rwanda’s Northern Province is home to more than 52 caves with more than nine miles of cave passages. The Musanze Cave is more than a mile long and is the most frequently visited. The caves, which were developed from volcanic activity in the Cenozoic period, date back 65 million years.
