Meet Demone Carter - Creative Ambassador
What are you working on as a creative ambassador?
"In my role as cultural ambassador I will be launching/re-launching a couple of projects aimed at getting San Joseans to tap into their own creativity by connecting with local artists. First I am planning on re-launching the ImagineSJ Showcase as a web series. In 2016-2017 I hosted a series of panel discussions aimed at getting local residents to learn about the vibrant micro-scenes that exist in San Jose and imagine what a fully engaged arts and cultural scene could look like in America's 10th largest city. The first iteration of ImagineSJ featured panel discussions and performances with a diverse array of artists from disciplines such as photography, visual art, comedy, street dance, and music (to name a few). My vision for the relaunch of the ImagineSJ is to do it as a web series where local creatives join me for conversations about their artistic practice and give viewers practical tips for how to tap into their own creativity. Each episode will feature an activity that viewers can try to get more in touch with their innate creativity.

The second project I will be launching is a two part podcast where I host roundtable discussions with local arts leaders about what will become of our arts and cultural scene post COVID. I think folks take for granted the festivals, small business, and cultural organizations that make our city great. I want to provide a platform for San Jose creative thought leaders to share their ideas for what our recovery can be. In addition, we will be asking listeners to chime in with their ideas for what the new San Jose will be like."

What are your favorite cultural experiences to see and/or do in San Jose?
"Oh so many things I want to list here. This is really a list of experiences I’ve missed most during the pandemic. Let see, Aztec New Year at Prusch Park, San Jose Jazz Festival (especially the Jazz Beyond Stages), The Changing Same weekly party at the Continental (put on by Universal Grammar), Needle to the Groove’s Wax Wendesday and Cinequest!!!"

Our definition of culture is broad. Do you have any else you would like to share that you haven't mentioned?
"I agree the definition of culture should be broad. What I would like to highlight here is the Hip Hop and DJ culture that exists within San Jose. We are the homebase for renowned artists like the Bangerz, B Lewis, and Traxamillion and I feel like these cultural contributions are often overlooked when we talk about arts and culture."
