Meet Ray Furuta - Creative Ambassador
What are you working on as a creative ambassador?
"I am exploring ways to break down cultural, social, and creative silos within a single project -- as well as challenge what is conventionally defined as "creative." The project idea initially proposed was one that would find an appropriate and vacant retail space downtown to serve as a venue that didn't identify with any one specific genre of art. When you think about it, all art spaces generally carry one primary artistic identity - there are very few venues that are an all-encompassing and cross-collaborative art spaces for communities to appreciate what they love and be exposed to new things. Ultimately, I'm aiming to cultivate a mentality that stretches the conventionality of creativity!"

What are your favorite cultural experiences to see and/or do in San Jose?
"Many don't know that I was actually born and raised in east San Jose, so the culture of our city is a huge part of who I am as an individual. My two favorite places where I feel at home are the Mexican Heritage Plaza on Alum Rock Avenue, as well as Japantown. Events, experiences, and community within these regions of our city are always my favorite to experience!"

Our definition of culture is broad. Do you have anything else you would like to share that you haven't mentioned?
"The more we can celebrate culture through a co-existing lense, the better our city community will be! Having a broad definition is great -- now, let's celebrate our diverse cultural identities and shared humanity!"
