New Rwandan Airport to Reach
Completion by 2026
|
Rwanda is on track to complete a new airport, located approximately 40 kilometers south of Kigali, by 2026. Initiated in 2017, construction was temporarily halted during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Ministry of Infrastructure estimates the airport's cost at $2 billion USD, with a 130,000-square-meter main terminal capable of serving 8 million passengers initially and expected to rise to over 14 million in the future, positioning it among Africa's busiest aviation hubs. The facility will include a dedicated cargo terminal handling 150,000 tonnes annually. The existing Kigali International Airport will continue special operations. Qatar Airways holds a 60% stake in the new airport under a 2019 investment agreement with the Rwandan government, enabling its construction, ownership, and operation.
