Hello!
Thank you for requesting a South Dakota Motorcycle Guide.
You may have requested a guide because you are interested in attending the 80th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, or you may just plan on taking in South Dakota’s beautiful scenic drives and world-famous attractions. As you make your way to our state, it is important for you to be aware that a few of the typically recommended routes may not be navigable.
Visitors and non-tribal residents who do not have a permit for providing emergency or essential services are NOT permitted to travel through some South Dakota tribal lands. Checkpoints have been put in place by some tribes to protect their residents from additional COVID-19 exposure. Travel delays should be expected when traveling through the Pine Ridge Reservation, as travelers may be required to stop at checkpoints for screening. As of late July, travel restrictions are in place for Cheyenne River Reservation.
Some Tribal Nations in South Dakota continue their checkpoints due to COVID-19 concerns. These checkpoints are located on highways in order to restrict access to tribal lands. Non-tribal residents and travelers who do not have a permit for providing emergency or essential services are NOT permitted to travel through some South Dakota tribal reservations.
Only those that fit these criteria are being permitted consistent access to the Cheyenne River Reservation:
- Tribal members
- Individuals with a tribe-issued permit
- Individuals providing medical services to the tribe.
Please visit here to access a map of documented tribal checkpoints, FAQ’s, and a visitor information sheet. The number of locations may change at any time.
